A Case for a Spam-Aware Mail Server Architecture
نویسندگان
چکیده
The current mail server architecture spawns a new process upon every new connection it receives. The new process deals with the handling of the mail from accepting “Helo” information till the end of the connection. While forking a new process for each separate connection has many advantages in terms of security and modularity, this architecture has severe performance implications in view of increasing unsolicited emails spams and emails with rogue connections. We propose a new architecture for mail servers, that retains the advantages of the process architecture for receiving mails, but at the same time wastes little server resources in case of bounced emails/rogue connections. Essentially, the new architecture does not fork off a new process until it is certain that the mail will not get bounced. We experimentally show that the new architecture use server resources more efficiently.

A Trust Based System for Enhanced Spam Filtering
The effectiveness of current anti-spam systems is limited by the ability of spammers to adapt to filtering techniques and the lack of incentive for mail servers to filter outgoing spam. A new approach, based on decentralised trust management, is described in this paper. An architecture and protocol, called TOPAS (Trust Overlay Protocol for Anti Spam), are presented. Each mail server records tru...
متن کاملExploiting Network Structure for Proactive Spam Mitigation
E-mail has become indispensable in today’s networked society. However, the huge and ever-growing volume of spam has become a serious threat to this important communication medium. It not only affects e-mail recipients, but also causes a significant overload to mail servers which handle the e-mail transmission. We perform an extensive analysis of IP addresses and IP aggregates given by network-a...
متن کاملA Machine Learning Approach to Server-side
Spam-detection systems based on traditional methods have several obvious disadvantages like low detection rate, necessity of regular knowledge bases’ updates, impersonal filtering rules. New intelligent methods for spam detection, which use statistical and machine learning algorithms, solve these problems successfully. But these methods are not widespread in spam filtering for enterprise-level ...
متن کاملDiffMail: A Differentiated Message Delivery Architecture to Control Spam
Unsolicited bulk electronic mail (spam) is increasingly plaguing the Internet Email users and deteriorating the value of Email as a convenient communication tool. Although many different spam control schemes have been proposed and deployed on the Internet, the proportion of Email spam seen on the Internet has been increasing in recent years. In this paper we argue that the difficulties in contr...
متن کاملAn Efficient Spam Mail Detection by Counter Technique
Spam mails are unwanted mails sent to large number of users. Spam mails not only consume the network resources, but cause security threats as well. This paper proposes an efficient technique to detect, and to prevent spam mail in the sender side rather than the receiver side. This technique is based on a counter set on the sender server. When a mail is transmitted to the server, the mail server...
